Anonymous asked: im sorry but can you explain what is ableism, i have never heard of it

kodykeplinger:

queerturtle:

I’m able-bodied so I’m not the best to answer but I’ll try my best (and people who are disabled can add to it if they want).

Ableism is when disabled people are being oppressed/discriminated/disregarded by able-bodied people (or just society in general).

Or a more eloquent definition (link):

Ableism is discrimination against people with disabilities, including the expression of hate for people with disabilities, denial of accessibility, rejection of disabled applicants for housing and jobs, institutionalised discrimination in the form of benefits systems designed to keep people with disabilities in poverty, etc.

Disabilities can include physical, mental, or developmental disabilities

Ableism unfortunately talked as much about as other -isms in social justice (and if it is it’s usually just one word about it included in a text post). So much for intersectionality…

Here’s a bunch of links about ableism (provided by Josefin):

I get asked this question a lot, so when I saw this post, I was already planning to reblog it. Then I saw my own post linked in it and got excited!

So here you go - for everyone who has asked what ableism is and why they aren’t familiar with the term.

A lot of people get confused when I tell them I vlog. How can I record and edit videos if I can’t see? Well, let me tell you!

Interesting video from a former Highwayer!

Here it is! The cover of my first middle grade novel, THE SWIFT BOYS & ME!  And here is the summary:
"Nola Sutton has been best friends and neighbors with the Swift boys for practically her whole life. There’s the youngest, Kevin, who never stops talking; the oldest, Brian, who’s always kind and calm; and then there’s Canaan, the ringleader and Nola’s best-best friend. Nola can’t imagine her life without the Swift boys — they’ll always be like this, always be friends.

But then everything changes overnight.

When the Swifts’ daddy leaves without even saying good-bye, it completely destroys the boys, and all Nola can do is watch. Kevin stops talking and Brian is never around. Even Canaan is drifting away from Nola — hanging out with the neighborhood bullies instead of her.

Nola just wants things to go back to the way they were — the way they’ve always been. She tries to pull the boys back to her, only the harder she pulls, the further away they seem. But it’s not just the Swifts whose family is changing, so is Nola’s, and she needs her best friends now more than ever. Can Nola and the Swift boys survive this summer with their friendships intact, or has everything fallen apart for good?

Nola’s struggle to save her friends, her unwavering hope, and her belief in the power of friendship make Kody Keplinger’s middle-grade debut a poignant story of loss and redemption.”

I absolutely LOVE the cover. The boys and Nola look just how I imagined them, and all the little details are so perfect! From Brian’s glasses to Nola’s bare feet - it just fits!
I hope y’all like it as much as I do! Please feel free to share and reblog, if you like! I can’t wait for this story to make its way out into the world, and for Nola and the Swift boys to make their way into your hearts!

We ADORE this cover! And this book!
